Educating Rural India

for a bright future

WHY RURAL EDUCATION

Rural education facility in India many times is often bare minimum and sometimes way below the standards. Thus it is of vital importance to give a fair chance to rural children, an exposure to quality education, It is helping to bring forth hidden talent in rural India.

S.E.T (Science Engineering and Technology)

Our program is implemented in two pronged approach. Dealing with Science Technology and Engineering through mobile vans traveling school to school for local personalised sessions.

In minivan, trained teacher’s visits schools with more than one hundred experiments designed to provide students with a hands-on learning experience that local teachers are unable to provide.

While most experiments make use of our models, we also occasionally use locally-available common materials to make new models.

The van visits each participating school several times a year, to maintain the curiosity and enthusiasm of students.

Our teachers explain every topic using different models. Students begin to understand concepts that were harder to decipher from the pages of their textbooks.

The model is passed around, as the children turn it over in their hands, examining it from all sides.

Through this hands-on, experiential learning, all of their senses are engaged and they discover how and why things work the way they do.

Apart from this we also hold camps, exhibits and talent search for improved experience of learning.

Problem of school teaching is that only 20% students understands what teacher is teaching, that is why other students does not show any interest, due to it whole academic performance goes down. Thus our Mathematics teaching is implemented through a very unique program called “Little Leaders Little Teachers” in collaboration with Vande Mataram Foundation.

Every student becomes learner and teacher through this program.

We conduct a test and select two students in every class [6th to 8th], in all the schools under the program.

These students are trained by our teachers in vacations. Daily more than 5 hours they are trained to give and conduct maths tests, teaching difficulties, how to fill progress report etc.

These students will run the same program for other students in school in similar manner.

VERTC Hyderabad staff will come twice in a year for evaluation.

Thus there is chain of students, a student who is in higher level he will teach to immediate lower level student and it goes on.

This course has 6 levels.

First level starts from basic & it gives confidence to students. Overall result of first level is to boost speed and accuracy of students in maths. When student completes 6 levels he can solve any maths problem from almost all competitive exams. Minimum 3 years are required to complete all levels.

Vidyavaan is an after or before-school program for children of 6 to 14 years old or any school dropout students, where facilitators from their own village educate them on study skills and life skills. The program runs six days a week. Study skills such as Marathi, English, Mathematics, Phonics, Craft and Art, and Life skills like Problem-solving, Decision making, Critical thinking, Creative thinking, Communication skills, Interpersonal skills and Yoga are being taught at Vidyavaan.

The present rate of dropout from schools in the Palghar district is 31.3%. Quality of education is compromised due to less efficient teachers and limited staff. Parenting style is poor as most of the families are Below Poverty Line and illiterate. Children are mostly engaged in helping parents on farms and household chores. Induced slow learning is found in children when we conducted the ASER test on a sample of 60 students of age group12 to 14 years old from 3 different villages. Our baseline survey shows 100% of children need help in English, 88.33%need help in Maths and 51.67% need help in Marathi. Food or sufficient nutrition is also one of the components for children being low in cognitive skills.

Provide children with a safe environment to learn and enhance their potential. Help them to overcome their learning difficulties through level-wise learning and thus improve their self-concept. Build children's peer groups with good morals and values within the community. Improve cognitive development and mind habits. To reduce the dropout rate from school.

Start Vidyavaan centers in villages where children will feel safe to learn and do various activities.

Appointing a local facilitator and training him/her to enhance potential within children through life skills and study skills.

Conduct parent meetings to convince them to send their children to Vidyavaan centers.

Provide learning tools and games along with a one-time meal for children.

Take children to study tours and conduct workshops so that every child gets good exposure. Good exposure is essential for cognitive development.

Facilitators and experts monitor every child closely to see if there is positive change and growth (both academic and psychosocial) in the child.

If needed take necessary interventions to help the child to overcome challenges.

Level-wise learning helps children to overcome induced slow learning and improve Self-Concepts.

Children have their own peer groups and there is a sense of emotional security within them. These peer groups are monitored closely.

Children from different communities come together and form peer groups which otherwise is very critical. We have children from Warli, Kokana, and Katkari tribal communities.

Observation is that more than 60% of students have crossed next level of ASER within 6 months.
